Tower Civils have built a wealth of knowledge which we are eager to share with you, founded on many years working in the water and drainage industry.

Here we have tried to answer some of the most common questions there are about new sewer connections.

What is a section 106 application?

A request under section 106 is where you request permission from the local water authority to be connected to the public sewer owned and operated by the local water authority. Before you can connect, you need to be given permission to discharge waste into the public sewer. This request is made directly to the local water authority; it is normally possible to find section 106 application forms on the website of your local water authority.

You may need to state the purpose for the new sewer link within the application usually because the building is a new construction or upgrading from an off-mains system) and the place you wish to connect to the public sewer.

We have collaborated with water authorities around the UK, enabling us to use our relationship with them in a timely manner to process your application.

What is a section 50 application?

If the location of the new sewer link is on public property, such as a footpath or a highway, a section 50 application is required. The request is sent to the local council for a Street Works licence enabling you to undertake construction on the public highway. Different local councils have various methods of implementation and time frames. The process can often seem overwhelming. We remove these issues.

What is a section 171 application?

An permit under section 171 is equivalent to an application under section 50, but a licence under section 171 does not authorise you to instal all the repair equipment already installed and is only used for investigative purposes. A road opening licence is a more common term for these applications. A section 171 application can be accessed from the local council.

Who can submit these applications?

Anyone may request applications for Section 50/171/106. However, Tower Civils are hugely experienced at completing these applications and you will need to have a contractor in place with supporting documentation to meet council demands.

Do you need permission before connecting to the public sewer?

Yes. You need to receive permission in writing by completing and authorising a section 106 licence before connecting your property to the public sewer. You would also need a street works licence from your local council if the link works would take place on public roads or footways.

How do I apply for a new sewer connection?

Please see above FAQ on section 106 applications, you may need to file a section 106 application with your local water authority.

Will the local water authority want to inspect the work?

Yes. The local water authority will send an inspector to sign off on the works and check that the new link has been properly constructed as we are connecting to their asset (the public sewer). As part of our quote, this is arranged by us and is assured.

How much does a new sewer connection cost?

There are multiple factors that contribute to costs for a new sewer connection, such as the location of the public sewer in the road, the depth of the public sewer, and your site's ground conditions. In order to make this all clear, our quotes detail the cost breakdown. Both applications can be made on your behalf by Tower Civils to the local water authority or council.

Who deals with the local water authority?

We have a dedicated sewer connection team and work closely with local water authorities around the UK. All contact with the local water authority can be managed, ensuring the most seamless new sewer connection experience possible.
